We had booked the 4pm Amtrak Express from NYC to Boston, allowing us to have a lazy breakfast in bed, late checkout from the hotel, and a stroll through the city before boarding our train. With no time for lunch (besides the delicious looking “exotic” fruits we bought at Eataly) we headed right to Penn Station, grabbed a Red Cap (fantastic pro-tip from Josh), and found perfect seats together on the train.

I was hungry. We had stocked up on CC Lemon and Raw Coconut Juice by the hotel but we had nothing to nosh on (saving the fruits for home). And then I remembered from the ride to NYC: the café on the train has a club sandwich wrap. Done. I had no high hopes, in fact I was expecting the worst… my last Amtrak train meal was some clam chowder maybe 2 years ago which I will never forget as being one of the worst chowders I have ever experienced…. But I digress.

Once the train got on the way I headed to the café and grabbed a club sandwich wrap, coffee, water, and a handful of napkins. I ran back to our seats and opened the plastic wrapping like it was Christmas; this would be my first red pepper tortilla based club, and who knew how this would pan out. But I was pleasantly surprised.

The gouda cheese was an interesting choice but definitely appreciated – it added a strong muted flavor to the club. I enjoyed that. Turkey was decent… not much more to say about that. Noting special, but at least it didn’t taste poor. Ample crispy lettuce that enhanced the sandwich/wrap complimented the uncrispy quasi-fake bacon, which, fortunately/unfortunately there were only 2-3 bites worth scattered around the lettuce. The thick red pepper tortilla made every bite a true mouthful of chewiness, but didn’t add as much flavor as I thought it would. There was surprisingly no real mayo usage which was perfect because this club didn’t need it: each mouthful was already full of moisture. Unfortunately, as you can tell by the photo, this club was a bit tiny… I’m not sure it would satisfy anyone’s hunger. Overall it was actually quite nice; the ingredients blended together well and I enjoyed this club more than I thought I would… although I try not to board trains without food already on hand, the Amtrak Express club sandwich wrap was a great second resort.
