The ABP club was sitting there on its lonesome, sandwiched in between two burly looking meals. I would have never noticed it if I wasn’t on the hunt for it.

Why do I subject myself to bad club sandwiches?

I thought this both before and after purchasing this club sandwich. But Au Bon Pain had slapped their logo onto this meal, so I felt a bit more assurance than the same sandwich being sold by the airport kiosk down the hall.

But false assurance can have dire consequences. And this was racing through my mind as I took my first bite.

Delicious ingredients are what make a club sandwich tasty, there is no doubting this. However ugly a club might be, when you’re chewing on its insides you better be liking what you taste. And the ABP club actually did deliver on taste… contrary to any initial thoughts I may have had.

Moist, yummy tomato that had strong flavor – great addition. Crunchy lettuce. Chedder not too sharp, not too flat. Bacon was actually lovely, as was the turkey, which both tasted unfrozen and of high(ish) quality… Although the bacon’s lack of crispiness was a sure sign of long shelf life (before I came along). These weren’t your normal airport meats (which is a good thing). Bread was an interesting choice. Fluffy, untoasted, plain, yet suitable; it worked, although it didn’t attract.

All together this was exactly what I was hoping for: a filling meal based around my favorite comfort food with little to no fuss. Perfect for the airplane or while waiting for yours to depart.

I travel through Dallas way more than I should, but probably because I fly American Airlines way more than I should. With that in mind, I now know of a great, quick club I look forward to grabbing during my stopover… yes, the TGI Friday’s Club Sandwich was great, but that was a sit-down meal and this was a pure convenience meal.

Will I look for this club at other Au Bon Pains in the near future? Maybe… if I’m traveling, I know it’s an ok choice, but if there’s something more creative nearby I think I might go with that. We’ll have to wait for the moment to present itself…
