I woke up in Philly angry my hotel didn’t have a club sandwich… an independent, boutique hotel, without a club just didn’t make sense. The Latham’s biggest disappointment. And as we made our way to the train station, my hunger and lust for a club, which in reality started the night before when I got back to the hotel room, did not diminish.

So I searched long and hard for a club sandwich at the 30th street train station. Kiosk to café I did my best to go where one would find a club at this time, and had no luck. Until I ventured into Cosi.

Cosi had a club sandwich on their menu, but at this hour, only breakfast was available. I was disappointed, until I noticed they had a… Club Squagel? Whatever that was, this was the creativity I needed at 745am to begin my train ride home.

I had never had a squagel before, let alone a breakfast club squagel, so this was new territory for me, and I was excited to explore the unknown. I ordered mine, asked for a cinnamon raison bagel, and waited for my breakfast club sandwich on a square bagel to arrive.

Why was this called a club? You’d have to ask Cosi, I really didn’t pick up anything traditionally club about it… but that’s what I should have expected ordering anything on a squagel.

Egg, bacon, cheddar cheese and tomato – not wildly entertaining ingredients. And the quality of them? Well… quality left a lot to be desired. I didn’t really understand this club sandwich and neither did the people I was with. It was a mystery, possibly one only Cosi could solve. Did I finish this? No, but because it was fairly filling. Was it good? Yes, it was tasty, especially for the price. Would I have rather had a traditional club sandwich? Absolutely, but I’m glad I had my first Cosi Club Squagel.

I will keep my eyes open to see if this square bagel trend picks up…. Although I have my doubts….
