Janet waited years to experience a club sandwich with me. Every time we visited, she told me about a new spot for a great club.‎ But neither of us thought Judie’s in Amherst would have one on their menu.

A local legend and true institution, Lily picked Judie’s to celebrate her graduation and upon my first perusal of the menu, I knew Lily had made a great selection. Bold creativity combined with a classic coolness not typically found in Western Massachusetts, Judie’s hit the nail on the head with offerings that were both comfort inducing and straight up adventurous.

Shout out to their martini list, which felt more Manhattan than midlands… I was not here to get drunk, but at their prices for their selection, and a true pro behind the bar, I had a feeling I’d be coming back at some point to celebrate another occasion.

Most importantly though, Judie’s is known for their popovers, including what goes in and around them. Lily wanted popovers for graduation, and it appeared everyone was happy to oblige.

Me? Well I was real obliged to try their chicken breast popover club. And I think upon seeing this, Janet was more excited than me!

Nearly kicking my mother-in-law underneath the table, I was successful at the challenging task of ensuring Janet didn’t tell the waitress about my reviews prior to ordering. Her excitement was understood by me, and I knew the integrity of my reviews was understood by her.

And so we waited with baited breath.

The service at Judie’s was homely and everything you’d expect from such a popular establishment in the heart of Amherst Mass, clearly frequented by locals who loved returning and out-of-towners looking for comfort. And their chicken breast popover club, tradition and creativity bundled into a delicious meal, was a testament to both of these groups.

The super moist chicken breast attempted to upstage the popover, a nearly impossible feat but one that only enhanced the meal. The bacon strips melded well with the melted cheese and sliced tomatoes, which added a fresh coolness to the dish. And truly, the popover was amazing. The only thing missing was some sort of gravy-like sauce.

Delicious. Not healthy, but winter warming for sure. And my few bites of Janet’s Turkey Pot Pie also revealed a “dish worth driving to”.

Loved Judie’s. I will be back. And in the intern, plan on being a global ambassador for them, praising their name in locations worldwide.

    Thanks, Evan!

Your review of Judie’s, is most impressive. In part, because I know just how difficult it was to keep Janet from spilling the beans about your website, especially as you dined, undercover! Demonstrative pride in her family and friends is a value only exceeded by her mother, Flo. Your ability to navigate these delicate and delicious matters is a testament to your values as a non violent, loving family man as well as your integrity as a reviewer. Although, I have visited Judie’s many times, I do not remember a club sandwich made with a popover from the rather large menu. Although, if memory serves, their wonderful popovers are optional vessels for just about everything on the menu. Now, after reading your review, I will have to try the chicken club. Thank you, again and Mazel Tov on your sweet sailing!

    With fond admiration,
