Last time I was at Rancho de los Caballeros I cried when we left. The trip had been so much fun, that our departure literally brought tears to my eyes.

22 years later, and I was experiencing the same.

If you’ve never vacationed at a Dude Ranch, I highly recommend it. Rancho de los Caballeros offers an awe inspiring family/group experience that includes shooting, golf, horseback riding, tennis, spa, stargazing, fantastic food, unique drinks, and best of all, warm hospitality.

We were a family of 20 people partaking it in all, and the group became quite aroused with excitement during lunch when we spotted two club sandwiches on the menu at the golf club: The California Club and the Grilled Shrimp Club.

Which to review? Being from California, I opted for the Grilled Shrimp Club. Looking back, this was a curiously odd choice being at a dude ranch in Arizona, but funny enough, this review is about Rancho de los Caballeros’s California Club, because that’s what they brought out instead.

Brought out by accident.

Have you ever been to California? My guess would be that this sandwich’s creator has never. But I bet they watched a lot of movies/shows. Because the only thing Californian about this club sandwich was the avocado. Is that really all it takes? Maybe…

Rancho de los Caballeros used their infamous bacon to make this a mighty meaty sandwich. Bacon that could have never come from California. Rich, smoked, salty, and savory. Paired with the nicely moist turkey, the bacon added everything this meal needed to it, and reminded me I was at a dude ranch in Arizona… and not in California.

I was saddened to see such a small amount of avocado in this sandwich. Avocado must be a unique ingredient around these parts – I could see the kitchen purposefully holding back on any additional amounts due to potential protest from the locals.

I love Rancho de los Caballeros, and while I liked their Californian Club Sandwich, I was eager to try the Grilled Shrimp Club, which I knew would be coming out shortly
