Spirit airlines changed my flight time 12 times in the 24 hours leading up to the departure.

From being delayed 10 minutes, to 90 minutes, to 29 minutes, to 30 minutes, back down to 10 minutes, up to 45 minutes, then back on time, I was finally at the airport looking at a timely takeoff. Nevertheless, I couldn’t help but feel the aviation world would laugh at the amount of email notifications Spirit sent me with these updates.

Unfortunately, it took over 90 minutes to get to the airport, even though my flight was at a delightful 1pm. One of the longest mid-day commutes I’ve been in in LA, I didn’t have much time to spare when I arrived at the airport. Spirit didn’t appear like a safe bet for food on my way to New Orleans, so I grabbed my free coffee from the American Airlines lounge and looked for a lunch spot with a shorter line.

The Original Farmer’s Market of Los Angeles – a famous spot located at The Grove in the heart of LA, this place had all the credibility one needed to trust that they’d make a great club sandwich. I saw the sign, recognized the logo in an instant, and walked over to peruse their selection.

$15 for a pre-made and packaged club sandwich did not seem like value to me. But what choice did I have? Again, I wasn’t going to rely on Spirit Airlines to provide a great meal, or great anything, even if I was sitting in their “big seat“ in the front.

I grabbed the sandwich and a water, only $21, and made my way to my on-time departure.

I’ve been on a lot of budget airlines but this may be the crappiest plane I’ve ever been on. Spirit really is a flying bus like no other airline can represent. Why do their seats not recline? I laughed when the stewardess claimed they come “pre-reclined.”

Like the airline I was flying, this club sandwich was criminally bad. I should sue the procurement person who sourced this meal and slapped a $15 price tag onto it.

Potentially some of the worst bread I’ve ever had, they clearly let it go stale before using it in their sandwich. I guessed they were trying to avoid the bread getting soggy by using such stale bread. I know the label said tomato, but there was only one slice hidden somewhere in the center. 3 types of meat, all fairly terrible, does not mean it will taste better. The variety was appreciated but the quality of them was not. Combining these ingredients into a poor ratio meant disaster all around.

Looking for some positivity, I did enjoy the aioli.

After a few bites I was done. I couldn’t take it anymore. This was garbage. The Original Farmer’s Market of Los Angeles should be ashamed.

An awful plane coupled with an awful club sandwich, not the best way to start the trip. But I didn’t let that get me down, New Orleans was only an hour away. So I buckled up, watched the end of Black Panther, and got ready for 36 hours of celebrating life with the family!
