Crawfish sacks, crawfish beignets, crawfish Monica, crawfish bread, crawfish corn bisque and that was just the start of it.

Duck stored in its own fat for two weeks, steak with foie gras, Fried oyster po’ boys, fried sweetbreads, baked oysters… and that was just the next part.

36 hours in New Orleans celebrating life with my family was an intense food and music enthralled experience. It was exactly one year to the day that my uncle was diagnosed with two brain tumors while attending Jazz Fest –  a year later, and we were celebrating life!

I was almost glad we didn’t make it to R’evolution for brunch Sunday before my flight! But still, my four hour plane ride from New Orleans to Los Angeles required a meal that could calm my appetite – and stomach – on the way home.

Not much to choose from at the airport, but oddly enough, a place called Copeland’s Cheesecake Bistro Scoop Café had the best sandwich menu around. Fresh made, it seemed like an odd eatery to specialize in sandwiches considering what they’re known for is cheesecake by the scoop.

I sat down before my flight and dove right in to their smoked turkey club sandwich.

Delicious. And I would expect nothing less from New Orleans. Soft and tender smoked turkey coupled with a bacon that added the right amount of flavor and texture you’d hope for. Crunchy tenderness. The lettuce and tomato weren’t anything special but they were perfectly applied to add more texture, flavor, and moisture.

But the real star of Copeland’s Cheesecake Bistro Scoop Café Turkey Club Sandwich was the toasted bread, which was as simple and delightful as bread can get. No frills, yet perfectly toasted and clearly fresh, it stood out as a key ingredient pulling all flavors in. Lightly buttered with garlic mayo, I loved the bread.

A nice ratio meant each bite tasted the same: satisfying.

At only $9.50, I considered this a huge win for airport club sandwiches around the world. This was the straightforward no fuss every bite yummy while not being heavy meal I needed. Thank you Copeland!
