Over two decades of skiing in Park City, Utah, and I had never been into Salt Lake City for après ski nightlight.

What nightlife you say? Well, when the opportunity presented itself to find out, we decided to take it, the 45 minute drive only slightly deterring is.

Ricky’s friends were “locals” – transplants from other cities who lived in Salt Lake City – and we followed them to an extremely packed Whiskey Street Cocktails & Dining for dinner and drinks. Overcrowded would be an understatement, as Jordan ventured through the masses to find literally the only vacant table available. This was clearly the spot to be on Saturday night in Salt Lake.

We sat down, proud of our four-seated-find, and waited for the menus to arrive, sharing jokes and catching up on life in SLC.

Whiskey Street Cocktails & Dining had a unique twist to their menu, a twist one wouldn’t expect from a city not known for its alcohol diversity: each food item on the menu came paired with a recommended liquor, wine, and beer. How could you not want to couple the correct libation with your fare?

With that in mind, I ordered the Tasso Club Sandwich, a Jameson Black Label, and a glass of the Farmhouse Red. Why were those recommendations made by Whiskey Street Cocktails & Dining? Not time to ask, we were hungry and thirsty from an aggressive day of skiing.

Although as the waiter left, I did ask Ricky’s friend, the head chef at a local hotel with over 500 rooms, if he was familiar with Tasso – a strong confirmation from his side gave me reassurance this was going to be a quality club.

Patience not exactly our friend, I downed the Jameson (delicious!) and waited for the club sandwich while I sipped the Farmhouse Red.

It’s rare you see a club sandwich that could be confused as a burger upon first sight. Whiskey Street Cocktails & Dining’s Tasso Chicken Club fell into that category. With the thick square of smoked cheddar cheese hanging on for life, and an “x marks the spot” layering of bacon that told me each bite would not contain this fatty pork, I wasn’t exactly impressed by its presentation. Perhaps my first bite down would tell a different story.

Amazingly hearty and intensely smokey, the flavors that came from the ingredients all jived together well. Not the easiest holdability, halfway through I opted for a fork and knife approach.

The chicken breast was the star here – grilled to perfection and super moist. But the Tasso ham went unnoticed – I couldn’t find its taste hiding in the layers of this club sandwich. In fact, many of the flavors got lost in the smokiness of each bite, a bitter sweet reality.

I ate most of what I could – tried not to fill up too much on the fries, which could have fried slightly longer – and finished my wine. Overall, a lot of room for improvement on Whiskey Street Cocktails & Dining’s Tasso Club Sandwich. But the value – wow – my whole meal including shared apps, tax, and tip was $40, a far cry from the prices one would find in Park City.

Worth the trip to hang out with friends and witness a busy Saturday night in Salt Lake City, I was content; the 40 minute car ride back to the base of Deer Valley flew by.
