We stopped at Atkins Farm in Amherst after visiting the Eric Carle museum; a wonderful treat to take our 1 year old son to a museum full of illustrations by one of his favorites.

I must have read Brown Bear to him 100 times, and he just loved the buffalo and the gorilla in From Head to Toe. A special trip to a special museum, it didn’t contain a huge collection, however it was ideal for a toddler who just learned to walk.

Atkins Farm is across the street from the museum, making it the perfect stop to pick up lunch before our son’s nap time. Both are located among gorgeous rolling New England farmland in the town of Amherst, and due to the pandemic and the local 5 colleges not have on campus classes, the whole area was quieter than normal… hard to complain, but it did lack the excitement of students, something to look forward to next year.

How could I not order Howard’s Choice Club Sandwich – but oddly enough, I asked at the deli counter who Howard was and I was met with puzzled faces; they did not know. I was surprised by that. But I liked that he gave me choices!

I went with pumpernickel and roast beef, based exclusively off the recommendations from the deli counter… I couldn’t go wrong with that. We took it “to go” and ended up back at the house in Northampton to all eat together.

Moist flavorful thicker cut and well layered roast beef. Really delicious, definitely a standout ingredient I imagine many people order by the pound from the deli. Bacon slightly overcooked, crumbled as I bit down into the sandwich, but the roast beef overpowered it anyway.

Tomato was amazing, as expected – this area of the country is overflowing with incredibly tomatoes – but just not enough. Why skimp on such a lovely, plentiful ingredient?

Bread was A+! My 1 year old son couldn’t stop eating the scraps of pumpernickel I left for him – we both loved the hearty flavor it lended to the club sandwich. I could just eat that pumpernickel on every sandwich it was so fluffy and creamy.

Although the 3rd piece of bread added a lot of bread to the club – I know this is a triple decker, but perhaps the slices could have been thinner as a result, since the meats and produce weren’t exactly plentiful. It caused the ratio of ingredients to be off just a bit.

Overall a solid club sandwich enhanced by the bread and meat selection, that suffered a bit from poor ratio of ingredients.

And how could I not be excited just to be back in the club sandwich game? The pandemic had brought great difficulty to trying new club sandwiches around the world. In 5 months I had cancelled trips to Phoenix, Chicago, Vancouver, Cannes, Honolulu, Las Vegas, Tucson, and Singapore. Once again, my mind, heart, and stomach were set on trying new club sandwiches in Boston (where I have just moved) and what lay ahead for travel in 2021…
