One of my partners was in Boston with his family to look at colleges; sure, no tours were allowed due to covid, but that didn’t stop his daughter from wanting to check out the city and its schooling during the application process.

We didn’t have much time – both of us had busy schedules – but lunch was on the books, and I decided to meet him at Stephanie’s on Newbury (Street), right around the corner from where he was staying and just a few blocks from my new office.

Stephanie’s On Newbury, or really just referred to as “Stephanie’s,” is one of those places everyone in Boston has been – tourist and local alike. It’s also a quintessential “Where should I take my parents while they explore Boston?” restaurant that many college students visit at least once during their tenure in the city.

With 45 minutes to spare, we quickly ordered some go-to selections from our outdoor dining perch: I ensured he had a lobster roll, and of course, I ordered the grilled chicken club sandwich for myself, opting for broccoli instead of potato chips.

Crispy buttery warm and fluffy rustic Italian bread spoke to me on each bite down; what a delightful sandwich carb. The brie and bacon danced together to provide a salty and savory blend of flavors, that paired very well with the sliced chicken. A schmear of avocado on the bottom and mayonnaise on the top left the moisture needed to hold this sandwich together. The tomato was just along for the ride. Great ingredients and delicious execution, albeit very standard… very fitting for the Stephanie’s crowd looking for classic delicious that just taste great.

I was happy – this was a solid club sandwich. Nothing special, but special wasn’t on my agenda for today: I was just looking to enjoy a good, quick meal with a friend in town for the weekend.

Like many Bostonians, I will be back to Stephanie’s, and honestly, I’d probably get the club sandwich again.
