My first work trip in 17 months – to a tourism conference with 800 others… I couldn’t have been more excited. My industry! My people! All together! There was so much to celebrate just around that notion, I almost didn’t need my daily Starbucks at Logan airport.

I don’t recall the last time I flew Southwest from Boston, but alas, that was the only airline flying nonstop to Baltimore. Many warnings from Southwest’s app drove me to arrive earlier than expected to the airport, so I had some time to kill as I wondered the terminal looking for my lunch item… Starbucks in hand.

Over the past 12 months I flew a decent amount, given the pandemic’s limitations, and every airport was full of empty establishments and limited staff, giving way to terrible food selections. So you can imagine my elated emotions when I saw Trade’s location within Terminal B. A well known dining – and drinking – destination in Boston’s financial district. More known for its Mediterranean cuisine, my elation turned to pure joy as I saw a club sandwich staring back at me on the menu. This would be the perfect meal to start the trip!

I placed my order and cruised through emails awaiting my lunch.

With hunger washing over me, I decided I couldn’t wait until the flight to dine, so I opened my meal and enjoyed it in a remote area of the airport, counting down the minutes until we boarded.

Not the prettiest looking plating, I decided to jump right in and avoid judging a book by its cover. The bottom piece of bread hadn’t be fully cut through, which obviously made it a challenge to pick up from the get-go. The holdability overall was abysmal, and I did my best to consume what became a very messy sandwich. I mean, you’re making this in Airport, slamming it into a to-go box, I would highly recommend you add a toothpick to keep all together. I hadn’t even gotten on my plane yet and just from them putting it in the bag it looked like I had a mess literally and figuratively on my hands.

Ok, lets put the messiness to the side and judge the quality. Chicken was blackened nicely, although not overly flavorful. Bacon was large and in full force, hard to complain about that. And while there was a lovely and evenly spread guacamole on this club sandwich, the roasted garlic aioli was AMAZING. Seriously, I could put that aioli on everything, it felt almost life changing. Of course, back to reality when I noticed the tomato was half a slice and missing from most of the meal.

So much promise for this club sandwich, but alas, it fell short in almost every category.

I have to admit I was a little disappointed walking onto my flight. I had been so eager to brag about my club sandwich at the conference, but this was one topic I wouldn’t broach.
