Memorial day was cold a rainy.

July 4th was cold and rainy.

And guess what: labor day didn’t fare much better.

These were the three days we chose to go up to Gloucester over the summer. Bad luck? Well, it wasn’t just us, everyone in New England was struggling with the weather from June through August, but fortunately our home is just a daytrip away, and our family is such great hosts, that even with the poor weather, it was worth it.

The plan was to get lunch at the yacht club, but on arrival to Eastern Point, it was clear we weren’t leaving the house; the baked goods were just coming out of the oven, and the stand to hawk the cookies and brownies was perfectly positioned to rake in the cash from passerby’s heading to the lighthouse.

No problem – ordering takeaway was much, much easier than corralling our large group, and we placed our orders while we took turns supporting the kids and their quest to have a successful bake sale.

The Eastern Point Yacht Club boasted the Coastal Club Sandwich – which clearly paid homage to an establishment simply being on the water, as none of the ingredients actually came from the sea. I ordered it with glee, trying to forget the terrible weather outside, knowing a club sandwich would only help in this moment.

While the holdability turned out to be slightly dreadful, the ingredients were fresh and flavorful, with a heavy emphasis on grilled chicken. Easy to finish in a matter of minutes, it was simple comfort food delivered during cold and damp weather, with nothing exciting and nothing coastal about it, yet still somehow satisfying in the moment.

We finished our meals and headed back to the bake sale stand, where our little cousins were cleaning up with freshly baked cookies and brownies!
