I rarely make it to Newton Center during lunchtime. I come for my morning coffee (although Starbucks has been closed due to staffing issues for some time), I occasionally get takeout dinner… however, a new experience drags me here weekly: an hour long assisted stretch at Stretchmed. Unable to commit myself alone, I decided I needed support in achieving my goal of becoming more flexible, and Strechmed was there to help.

12noon stretch meant I needed a quick bite after, something I could enjoy as I rushed to my next meeting back in front of my laptop at home.

I knew Sandwich Works existed, but there was never a moment that begged me to walk in and dine out. And today was that day. Their “Spectacular Special” sign fabulously showcased their California Turkey Club, and with no ingredients listed (besides the fact it came with avocado), the mystery beckoned me to take a bite of this meal.

Sandwich Works was clearly a popular destination frequented by repeat customers who live and work in the area. You could tell from the conversation among patrons as well as their short dialogues with the counter staff… this local, trusted establishment had family run business written all over it.

A classic club sandwich pulled together with delicious multi-grain bread, I was a little overwhelmed by the amount of lettuce and lack of avocado that came tucked into the meal. The sliced turkey was lovely, perfect flavor and texture, but it got drowned out a b it by the mushy middle slice, which rendered itself more of a nuisance than a compliment to a triple decker that would have sufficed with two slices instead of three.

Very light on the California, I gotta say it, but if you’re going to make a California Club, and you’re calling out that it comes with avocado and no other ingredients, it better be full blown “I just got transported to Los Angeles” avocado or don’t waste my time.

I gave Newton Sandwich Works two thumbs up, but don’t think I’ll be back for their club sandwich… the whole experience was worthy of returning though, and I will…. some day…
