I didn’t choose the hotel.

But I was very happy to stay here.

Alma Barcelona was a wonderful hotel in a splendid neighborhood of the city. 5 stars exuded from their every pore as you entered the hotel and began the check in process.

36hrs in Barcelona is not a lot of time to enjoy all that the city has to offer. Still, I had managed to eat pounds of jamón ibérico during my first 24hrs, walk off much of it, and arrive back to my hotel room after a 5pm coffee to get ready for the night out… slightly hungry, knowing dinner at Uma wasn’t until 9pm.

I had 40 minutes to shower, grab a snack, and get ready for drinks. Just enough time to order a club sandwich from in-room dining. Fortunately, Alma’s menu boasted a GL Club Sandwich… what the GL stood for, I never could guess (although found out later it stood for “Gran Luxury”) and with no ingredients on the menu to wet my appetite, I took a shower and patiently waited for my meal to arrive.

Absolutely fantastic.

With rich flavors and warm tones surrounding my taste buds, each bite down produced a giant smile on my face. The ham, not overly salty, had a firm texture that melted in my mouth like the jamón ibérico I had been eating out of cones all day. Hot, savory but not overpowering emmental cheese, wrapping itself around the meal, with a juicy tomato enriching each morsel… wow this was well executed. One would think chicken, ham, and bacon, in one meal was too much, but Alma Barcelona’s focus on ratio meant it was well executed.

But the star of Alma Barcelona’s club sandwich had to be the bread. Soft, crisp, and so delicious, it was a testament to the myriad of boulangeries surrounding the hotel. I could have eaten the bread alone it was so good.

The “match stick” fries that came with it were wonderful as well. But even better, was the Wilkin and Sons tomato ketchup, a fantastic, delicious addition to the greasy side dish.

Ham, ham, and more ham, I couldn’t get enough of my trip to Spain. Ibérico, serrano, pan fired, cured, roasted, and now sliced for a club sandwich, I was like a ham addict getting my fix everywhere… Alma included.
