Who orders the Grilled Shrimp Club at a Dude Ranch in Northern Arizona? The Angelino that doesn’t believe in ordering a California Club at a Dude Ranch in Northern Arizona, that’s who.

Mocked by my family around me, the Grilled Shrimp Club allured me from the menu as we dined outside at the Golf Club at Rancho de los Caballeros. Eating a California club sandwich outside of California and expecting it to be good was like eating New England Clam Chowder in California an expecting it to be good… so I went for the grilled shrimp, an ingredient I knew traveled well frozen.

One might conclude after reading that paragraph that I wasn’t expecting the best either way. Still, I loved the food at Rancho de los Caballeros, so I wasn’t worried.

Well, long story short, I got what I expected.

The shrimp was fairly flavorless. Most likely due to the fact they were just frozen. And I knew that going in, ordering shrimp at a dude ranch in the middle of the desert. The roumelade was good, but nearly nonexistent. Sadly I was more content with the Californian Club that came before.

However, let me take a moment to acknowledge the star of both club sandwiches: the French fries. These spicy curly fries were addictively good. I could have eaten plates of them. I was thrilled these weren’t on the dinner menus as I would have consumed mountains of them the nights before. Perfectly crispy on the outside, slightly moist and chewy on the inside, flavored throughout, I know this place knew its French fries… and bacon.

Thank you Rancho de los Caballeros, see you again in another 22 years!
