I was in San Diego on business staying at the brand new Intercontinental Hotel, which as fantastic as it was, came without a club sandwich. Unfortunate.

So as a ventured off for my day full of meetings, I knew I had to find a club that would fill me up with the energy I needed to keep the conversation flowing during the marathon day I was in, an energy coffee alone could not provide.

It was number one on Yelp when I Googled sandwiches in La Jolla, San Diego. I was coming from meetings in Downtown, to outside the city, and finally ending up in this beautiful coastal town before heading back to the San Diego Convention Center. I pulled into a parking space literally in front of a small alley containing several shops, including my lunctime destination: Deli-Icious.

The phone was ringing off the hook when I entered, clearly a popular delivery spot. I ordered the club and sat down outside waiting patiently for my meal while checking the emails I had missed on the drive over from Rancho Bernardo Inn.

As busy as their take-out orders were, they obviously prioritized their sit down customers; my club sandwich arrived just a few minutes, quickly made and beautifully done totally stacked with bread.

Delicious – no pun intended. While at first glance it looked like too much bread, I absolutely fell in love with corn rye that brought the sandwich together. Just an incredible amount of flavor that only enhanced the other ingredients in this meal.

But the ratio did get to me – upon finishing, I had a tremendous amount of bread leftover on my plate. While I loved the meal and the ingredients, the noticeable lack of them irked me a bit, and made me think the anticipated great value that I was originally excited about, wasn’t actually present in the sandwich.

Not enough tomato. Paper thin slice of bacon. A dash of onion. I wish they had charged me a dollar or two extra and just included more ingredients.

But how could I complain? Sitting out in the San Diego sun, with that  cool La Jolla breeze, I was in heaven enjoying this fantastic freshly made club sandwich.
