It had been months since our last family trip. In fact it had been months since I simply flew – my airport navigation skills were getting rusty.

Nothing epitomized this fact more than directing our taxi to the wrong terminal at Boston’s Logan Airport. Wow did I feel like an idiot realizing we weren’t flying JetBlue and needed to traverse through Central parking to find the American Airlines terminal – with a 2 year old, 4 checked bags, a stroller, and ample carryons.

Fortunately Boston’s airport is small, and we were checked in, through security, and looking for food options with comfortable time to catch our flight.

Still, it was a stressful moment. Coupling this with our itinerary – BOS to SAC via DFW with a 2 year old – it was hard to find excitement in the moment. Stress. There’s not a better word to encapsulate my emotions as we traversed through Terminal B looking for food options among the many closed establishments.

7am and I was already feeling like a stressed idiot. What a great way to start family vacation.

I needed a reset. I needed glee, not glut. Frustration out, happy in. And as we perused different menus, calmness fell upon me seeing Potbelly’s Turkey Club Sandwich adjacent to items my son and wife would also enjoy during the first leg of our flight.

Professionally toasted, Potbelly’s knew how to sandwich a meal with great holdability. And the ingredients, perhaps a few levels above your average terrible airport club sandwich, I started to enjoy this club sandwich more than my previous Potbelly experiences. Decent turkey, overly hyped nueske bacon, and hodgepodge of lettuce, tomatoes, and onion, these standard ingredients didn’t stand out but didn’t disappoint. The saltiness overwhelmed me, and there was nothing I could do but drown my bloodstream in sodium as I gobbled down each bite.

There was clearly no reason to go out of your way to get this club sandwich – but among all of the closed restaurants and cafes, among all of the terrible takeaway options, Potbelly’s is a winner at Boston’s Logan Airport. Would I come back? We’ll see how quickly airport restaurants can ramp up and open in this post-covid travel world, and how my selections will change.
